It’s eating your bra-a-ain!

Pattern: Brainmonster by the awesome Cyn (adult size for cartoon-head kid)

Yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash, red, 1 skein + Dalegarn Free Style Superwash wool (white), 1 skein (together enough for the hat, slippers, and mittens)

Needles: #6

Mods: Basically none. Except I didn’t follow Cyn’s instructions for securing the google eyes – just used superglue. And yes, one fell off, why do you ask?

Cyn used her head-munching prototype as her avatar on craftster and I coveted. Then she began promising to write up the pattern, and I slavered. Apparently, it was tricky (but time well spent). Then she did, and I leapt to my needles! By which I mean I cast on 2 weeks later at a conference (which, for me, qualifies as leaping).

Because, you see, my nephew was refusing to wear his hat, in the gentle chill air of Seattle, and my sister requested a spectacularly awesome knitted hat that he would be helpless to resist. Brainmonster was the clear winner, despite a field of formidable contestants (ok, that last one was beyond awesome – maybe next year).

I took a break from the hat to concentrate on stripy hemp, but the hat knitted up so fast that I had time before Xmas to make a couple of footmonsters, too.

Pattern: Grandma slippers, resized for tiny feet (ravlink)

Yarn and needles: same (plus purple Cascade 220 Superwash)

Mods: Yeah, Grandma never made ’em this way. Instead of the eyelet border around the ankle, I did 3 or 4 rows of 1 x 1 rib and then added 3 teeth (1 big and 2 small) from Cyn’s Brainmonster pattern. Almost as an afterthought, I picked up stitches at the back below the ribbing and improvised a purple tongue (k4, p1, k4 – intended to curl at the edges), and decreased it to a rounded point. Helps the boy pull on the slippers, helps the monster slurp up the footy goodness.

We were walking to the bus stop one day, dressed like this, and a firetruck drove by and the firemen waved at T! I can’t imagine why this boy would attract a fireman’s attention.

(You can also see there the mittens I whipped up of a morning, without a pattern, at the cabin because there was a need, and I had the yarn. I’m rather pleased with them.)
