Birthdays are for eating September 2, 2007Posted by merp in Champaign-Urbana, Food, Life, Pisco!.
Poor Aaron was too sick to do much of anything on his actual birthday. And so was I. But I am starting to recover, finally, so pulled it together yesterday to make him a cake.
This is the French Chocolate Almond Cake from Moosewood Restaurant New Classics (truly an essential cookbook). I used hazelnuts instead of almonds and very strong coffee brewed from Sumatran beans Aaron roasted a couple of days ago, instead of the instant granules (!?) called for. And went through about 7 eggs and several profanities in my attempts to separate 3 (not to worry – we’ll have scrambled eggs). Also, I never seem to have regular granulated white sugar in the house, so used brown sugar and organic evaporated cane sugar instead, which may have affected the texture. Other than that, I followed the recipe exactly, including the optional cinnamon and black pepper.
It was a complete success and tasted at least as good as it looks. But Pisco only got to look.
This is their Mediterranean sandwich – a muffuletta type of deal. I had the grilled cheese (which also had apples and figs). The fillings were excellent; the bread just decent.
But the weather was perfect.
