Pisco has a new trick August 5, 2006

Posted by merp in Pisco!.

About 2 weeks ago, Pisco learned to catch! (My posts are pretty much always going to be a little behind from here on out.)

We’d been throwing things at his face for, oh, months, but they always just bounced off. Until the evening of July 21 or so, when it just clicked. Aaron was throwing the squirrel at him and he tried opening his mouth. Once he got the concept, as we suspected, he totally had the reflexes and the timing.

That first night, he caught squirrel after squirrel (far better than I could do). Squirrels are easy, you might say, what with the squishiness and the tail. But we’ve worked on other objects as well. He can do kibble and popcorn, and various chewtoys, and he’s ace with a tennisball – impressed everyone at the dog park yesterday.

But he’s not quite there with frisbees yet.

Hey! Those are the squirrels who came in the log we sent from Boulder! I remember you said the log had a sad fate, but we are glad to see the squirrels are still around. It is very exciting to see them on the blog. I think he could be a flyball superstar.

Yep, they sure are. It’s unbelievable that they’re still around, as he’s now figured out how to destroy any other soft toy within 20 minutes of receipt. He has very dextrous paws and can grip a toy between them tightly while ripping out it’s guts. But the squirrels have some kind of mysterious amnesty. Probably because they still have great squeakers.

Pisco! The talent! Try it with air-popped popcorn; Bailey will leap like a dolphin for that stuff.

She also has that squirrel/log toy, but the opposite thing happened–she eviscerated the squirrels, but carries the log around very carefully. Dogs are weird.
